Today, instead of sharing some music that I like. I’m introducing the unofficial launch of the idea that I have talked about on various occasions in the past. Yes, I’m referring to ear full of gold. It was an idea that my friend Joe and I came up with, about a year ago. Joe has been putting together the design for a while, and we just got something up and live, last week. Very, very soon, there will be discussion of music on there. For now, just check out QWAOBWSTT.
I love Tribe. There is nothing groundbreaking about this mix. But I saw a link to it the other day on another blog that I read, and ended up listening to the whole thing. It has a lot of the songs I love. Anyway, DJ Platurn is the one who compiled it. Check out the mix.
Remember The Knife? Yeah– that Swedish brother and sister electronica outfit. Well, we were at a party in the West Village weekend before last and met a super cool group of Swedish girls. One of them was dressed in a jump suit, and was apparently going to be shooting Mary J. Blige the following Monday for some British publication, hahahaha. One of the first things that I asked these Swedish ladies, is if they were into The Knife. Their response was basically a polite “duh.” Anyway, the “sister” component of the duo that comprises The Knife, calls herself Fever Ray (real name– Karin Dreijer Andersson). She is totally bad a$$. In fact sometimes Reagan makes me skip her tracks when they come up on random in the car, because Reagan says they scare her. I feel like some of Fever Ray‘s tracks definitely have a menacing lining to them. So, what better artist to share the week before Halloween? PS, that image above is one of her tamer ones. I’m telling you, she is hardcore (do a google image search). Anyway, I really like this track. It’s called “I’m not done.” Check it.
On a Mark Ronson kick since I have been back from Chi-town. I had heard a few of his remixes, liked them, etc.. But I wasn’t aware that he had released a full length album in in 2010. My friend Jeni fed me a sample while I was hanging out with them after the race. The track I heard, actually featured Q-tip. So I liked it right away. I wasn’t sure how much of the rest of the album I was going to like. Surprising, quite a few tracks are good. The name of the record is “Record Collection.” The track that I’m sharing features the vocals of Rose Elinor Dougall and Theophilus London. The name of the track is “Hey Boy.” Have a listen.
After listening to that J. Rocc mix about a thousand times last week, I decided that today I was going to do another Quantic track for audio goodness. This one is actually by the Quantic Soul Orchestra. It’s called “Left & Right.” The vocals are by Alice Russel. I love the flow of this whole track. But I especially love the bass lines, which don’t drop in until about 1:20. Check it out.
I know it isn’t Tuesday or anything, but I had to share this. If you were a LMC reader, then you probably know how crazy I am about Quantic. J Rocc recently took a fairly good cross section of Quantic’s work and threw it all together into a 45 min mix. When I listen to this thing, it makes me want to throw a party, just so that I can put this mix on super loud in the background.
The Pixies have always been one of my very favorite bands. “Doolittle” was one of the first CDs that I ever owned, when CDs first hit the market. Remember they came in those big long boxes to try to prevent theft? Anyway, I was just starting to learn bass guitar at the time, so the tracks on “Doolittle” were some of the first ones that I would play along with. Frank Black A/K/A Black Francis, as we all know, is the front man of The Pixies. I followed him pretty closely for his first few solo albums. Then, I started really getting into hip hop for a while, and kind of lost touch was was going on in the world of alt rock. Wellllaahhhh, I was at the Tony Hawk vert jam, a few weeks ago and the DJ put on “Los Angeles.” At first, I was totally thrown. I was like, “I know and love this song. Why haven’t I heard it for 15 years?” I went straight home that day and dug up all of my old Frank Black. It was just as good as I remembered. Enjoy “Los Angeles.”
Ok, I know that I haven’t really done much variety lately. I think that after the streak I have been on, I’m going to have to throw in some gritty sounding rock next week. Until then: Phantogram. These guys are from upstate NY, which is kind of awesome in its own right. I like outfits that alternate between male and female vocals. Although I have to say that with Phantogram, I tend to enjoy the tracks featuring exclusively female vocals a bit more than the ones with the guy doing vocals. Anyway, this song is from the album “Eyelid Movies,” and is titled “As far as I can see.” Check it.
I’m normally not much of a fan of dubstep. But every once in a while I hear one of the less intense/busy interpretations of the genre that I can dig on. That’s how I feel about this track by the Freestylers. For an outfit touting one of the least creative names around, they fortunately put a little bit more effort into coming up with beats. This song is called “Cracks.” It features the vocals of Belle Humble, and is remixed by Flux Pavillion. You may or may not like it.
You may recall the post on LMC back in June featuring an XX track from the collab album with GSH. Well, I thought it was appropriate to post another Jamie XX track this week, seeing how Jamie XX was rocking the turntables for Sunday’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. I have listened to the entire set back to back, twice since Sunday morning. The track that I’m sharing today wasn’t actually part of the essential mix. It is a spin that XX put on Adele’s “Rolling in the deep.” One of the reasons that I love his style so much, is because I feel that electronica (especially house), tends to get so busy and muddled. I love the way that XX keeps it distilled down enough that you can hear the different elements that he uses. Anyway, here is the track.
